Collection: Baruj Salinas

Salinas is quoted as saying: "Because of my connection and collaboration with poets and writers such as María Zambrano, José Angel Valente, Pere Gimferrer, and Michel Butor, I developed a concept of the language of the clouds. This consisted basically of a grey background with white as the main color of my palette–the white symbolizing clouds. I also used pictograms, ideograms, and strange alphabets like the Greek alphabet, the Hebrew alphabet, and the Iberian alphabet". On another occasion Salinas was quoted as follows: "To me, painting is not work. It is something that transcends labor. I love to be in my studio painting because I forget about everything else. I’m so concentrated on it that it is like a meditation. I concentrate on what I’m doing and I enjoy it while I’m doing it. I enjoy seeing a wide space being developed into something that has life. It’s always been the most important thing in my life. And architecture was never so.”

Baruj Salinas is a Cuban Postwar & Contemporary painter who was born in 1935. He studied at Kent State University in Ohio – Salinas found early success as a painter and engraver. He is also an educator, having taught fine art, for many years at Miami Dade College.

This gallery represents three contemporary artists, who we feel have significant investment potential, who's work can be considered "blue chip", who have the CV's and museum presence to back that up, and who this gallery considers to have both conceptual genius, and technical mastery. Think about this for a moment. How many contemporary artists can you say this about? These artists are Baruj Salinas, Francisco Toledo (his body of work can be seen on our Artnet site), and Ramon Alejandro. Raul Enmanuel has those qualities too, but without the major museum presence, therefore we cannot make a statement about his investment potential.

Salinas is one of the most significant, and well established contemporary Latin Masters this gallery represents. He has work in the permanent collections of over 35 museums, and has had 150 solo shows worldwide, and a significant number of museum shows.
